by Shefali Tandon

Living in Delhi, one often looks out for options to sneak out to take a break from the hectic schedule and pacy lifestyle. Corbett is a fascinating escape especially for wildlife, nature lovers and bird watchers. The Tiger reserve, spread across 520 sq km is a great attraction for people in Delhi and nearby areas of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Given its proximity to NCR, it s a superb weekend getaway and is often clubbed with a visit to the hill town of Nainital.

Being well connected by both road and rail network, it is extremely easy and convenient to reach Jim Corbett. Ramnagar is the nearest rail and road head and is the best bet to reach the destination. While it is an year round destination, people prefer to visit Corbett during mid November to mid March owing to a pleasant weather. Peak summers can be extremely hot and most of the entry gates are closed during the monsoon seasons.

Apart from Wildlife Safari, Corbett also offers some other great attractions for sightseeing. Like, the Kalagarh Dam which is located in the south west part of the national park and is a popular bird watching site. The place hosts many migratory birds during winters. Corbett Falls is a 20m water fall situated 25km from Ramnagar city and about 4km from Kaladungi. Situated on Kaladungi and Ramnagar highway, the water fall is surrounded by dense forest and is extremely scenic. Garjiya Devi temple is a sacred pilgrim spot located on the bank of river Kosi and is a popular tourist spot around Kartik Poornima in the month of November/December.

Given its natural landscape including hills, forests, riverbeds, Corbett has something unique to offer every time you plan a visit to this quirky destination. One can choose to stay anywhere around the multiple entry points to the national park. The options vary from riverside to forest view, countryside, hill side to the midst of forest. With these special and interesting offerings, each visit to Corbett becomes distinct.

Ramganga, Kosi, Sonanadi, Mandal and Palain rivers are the main water bodies and lifeline of Corbett National park and add a key charm to the park. One can indulge in adventure sports like angling and fishing here. Though, prior permit is required for the same.

If you wish to get a peek into the village life then choose a resort on the Nainital road. The area is not just lush green but is coupled with agricultural farms, mango orchards and villages. Resorts offer a day tour to these beautiful orchards and villages, which will leave you mesmerised and completely rejuvenated.

Elephant safaris are available in the Dhikala and Bijrani zones which are another key attraction for people, apart from the regular jeep safari. Do make prior booking as there are few elephants allowed inside the park for safari purposes. Forest rest houses and lodges offer a great night stay experience in the lap of mother nature. Again prior booking is required for the same.

Corbett is also coming up as a destination wedding option for people in Delhi and nearby areas of UP and Uttarakhand. Given the multiple amenities and natural offerings, Corbett serves as an ideal spot for starting the new journey of your life.

The Park also serves as a great stop over point for people visiting the hill town of Nainital. It is situated about 70km away from Jim Corbett National Park and makes for a great travel combo option from Delhi.
