Varkala beach is a cliff beach with great viewing points ... November end to March is the season for Varkala. There are many beach shacks to try out great fish dishes. I recommend the " fish in banana leaf " for a taste of Kerala''s cuisine. In terms of water sports, Surfing is very popular here ... Paragliding, kayaking and windsurfing also happen when the conditions are right ... Great places to stay are available at affordable rates ... The Janardana Swami temple is an ancient temple and has been around for 2000 years ... Yoga classes are also held at various places on the cliff. Varkala is definitely worth a visit ...

Varkala will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my first and by far the best solo trip. I travelled during off-season and got pretty good deals on hotels. The whole trip cost me 3. 5k. It includes travel to and fro Varkala from Bangalore, food (I mostly had Kerala food in local restaurants and coffee in one of the cafes on the cliff). I believe in, ''jaisa desh waisa bhesh''. Hospitality in Varkala gets 11/10. Not even a single person denied me help. Be it instructing the bus conductor about my destination (PS conductors mostly speak in Malayalam) or suggesting best places for food and a lot more. People in Varkala seemed denatured. The beach is probably the best place you can be. It gets crowded on weekends and is mostly empty on weekdays. There are 3 popular beaches on the coastline. The most popular one being papanasham beach or Varkala beach. It can be reached from North cliff or helipad. Sit on the cliff and watch the sun go down. You will remember the sunset as one of the best ones you will ever see. Then comes the Black beach or Thiruvambadi beach. Less crowded, same view. My personal advice is, don''t stay on this beach during high tide. It can get difficult to go out as the stairs are filled with moss and may be dangerous. The last and the best beach is Odayam beach. Almost empty most of the time. This place is best for a peaceful sunbath. This is about Varkala town. There are a few more attractions nearby which can be reached by Hired Auto rickshaws or public transport. You get buses near janardhana swami temple. Few of the attractions include Kaduvayil Juma Masjid, Anjengo Fort, Light House beside the fort, Kappil lake and beach.
