Bekal is small town in northern Kerala. Close to Kasaragod at the distance of 16 Km, Bekal Fort is the largest and best preserved fort in the whole of Kerala. The historic Bekal Fort offers a superb view of the Arabian Sea from its tall observation towers, which were once occupied by huge cannons. The giant keyhole shaped fort, the golden expanse of a beautiful beach surrounding the fort, backwaters and water sport facilities attracts the attention of the travellers from far and wide. This tourist spot has numerous attractions. It offers the customary Keralite warmth and add a memorable experience.
The nearest airport being is Mangalore airport about 50 km away. One can easily get a taxi to reach Bekal. The two nearest major railway stations to Bekal are Kasargod and Kanhangad. Both railway stations are around 12 km away from Bekal.
The summers start in the town from the month of March and lasts till May. This entire season is a hot and sometimes the temperature touches 36°C. Usually, tourists prefer this season for sightseeing as the sky is clear. Monsoons usually start from the month of June and last till September bringing heavy rains in the town. Winter season starts from December and remains till February. During this period the weather remains dry but pleasant. This season has moderate and cool climate. The maximum temperature during winters is generally 25°C while the minimum temperature counts around 20°C.
Chandragiri Fort: Located on the banks of the Chandragiri River, Chandragiri Fort is believed to be constructed in the 17thcentury by Sivappa Nayak of Bednore. It is said that Sivappa Nayak established his authority over the area and built a chain of forts, the Chandragiri Fort being one of them. The fort is in ruins now and is frequently visited by both locals and tourists as it offers breath taking view of the Chandragiri River joining the Arabian Sea. It has become a vantage point to watch the sunset as well.
Houseboat Cruise: Houseboat Cruise is another fascinating prime attraction in Bekal. Here one can enjoy a cruise all along the palm fringed backwaters located in the Malabar region. These houseboats are designed with spacious features and an appropriate place for whole family to spend some amazing moments.
Bekal fort: The ancient Bekal fort is one of the prime locations in the Bekal, which is spread on the area of more than 40 acres. Important features of this fort are the water-tank with its flight of steps, the tunnel, the ammunition magazine and the broad steps leading to the Observation Tower. The Bekal fort is about 300 years old. This fort has been constructed in the 1690's during the period of Sivappa Nayak.
