Chakrata is a small town situated in the Dehradun district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a cantonment town which was initially a cantonment of the British Army. Located at an elevation of 2,118 meters, this town is at a distance of 98 kilometres from the state capital, Dehradun. It is located between the Yamuna and Tons rivers. The best time to visit Chakrata is all through the year except chilly January and February. Chakrata witnesses pleasant summers, with cool mountain breeze delighting the tourists. This season extends from the month of March to June. This season witnesses an average maximum temperature of 28°C, and an average minimum temperature of 10°C. This is the ideal time for sight-seeing. Monsoon season, which extends from the month of July to September, has medium rainfall with cold winds. Winter season starts from the month of December and lasts till February is extremely chilly, with an average maximum temperature keeping below 16°C. Whereas, average minimum temperature going as low as -5°C.
Chilmiri neck: Chilmiri Neck is located around 4km away from Chakrata town It is the highest peak in Chakrata and is enamored by lush green deodar forests and opens up to picturesque views of soaring mountains and dazzling descending valleys. The sight of colourful butterflies and various bird species are pleasant and charming. The majestic views of Swarga Peak, Banderpoonch Massif and the Rohini Peak can be enjoyed from the top of Chilmiri.
Tiger Falls: Tiger Falls is counted amongst the few largest waterfalls in India and is a great Chakrata attraction. It originates at a height of 312 feet, and has a beautiful view with forests at the back. The walk towards the waterfall is extremely interesting and exciting. The calm atmosphere surrounding the waterfall is extremely relaxing. It is a busy picnic spot during peak tourist seasons.
Ram Tal Horticultural Garden: The Ram Tal Horticultural Garden at Chakrata is a great location that has huge variety of flora and fauna. Various species of birds such as Oriental Turtle dove and Black Headed Jay, can be spotted here. The greenery at this place is amazingly refreshing.
