Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal, gets its name from Lord Vishnu. The town prospered in the 17th and 18th centuries and was the capital of the Malla kingdom. Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages of time. The Malla kings built grand terracotta shrines to celebrate their love for Lord Krishna. The ancient capital of Mallabhum, Bishnupur, is a repository of some excellent terracotta temples. The oldest brick temple is a curiously shaped Rasmancha with an elongated pyramidal tower surrounded hut-shaped turrets. Apart from the temples, terracotta pottery, artefacts and even jewellery are popular. Bishnupur is also known for its traditional handloom saris as well as terracotta pottery, artefacts and jewellery and the Bishnupur school of painting. One of the most exquisite saris in India called the Baluchari Saris are created by craftsmen of this place. Bishnupur is also famous for the metal craft, popularly known as Dokra. The Lalbandh, Krishnabandh, and Pokabandh were built by Malla kings around 17th and 18th centuries. These were made to provide water to the villagers and to protect the town from enemy attack by draining out the water towards them. The rich tradition of the Bishnupur Gharana, a school of Hindustani classical music is kept alive through local music academies.

I had been to Bishnupur by road in the month of May 2016. Bishnupur is a must-visit in the tourism circuit of present-day West Bengal. The must-visit attractions around Bishnupur include the Jore Bangla temple, Ras mancha and Lalji Temple. The Jore Bangla temple was built in 1655 AD by Raghunath Singh. The temple is based on the Chala style of architecture and the terracota works are extremely brilliant, for starters and visitors to this ancient place can acknowledge. The Ras Mancha was built in 1600 by the King, Bir Hambir. Today, the temple which was housing the presiding deity dedicated to Lord Radha Krishna is more of a monument than a traditional temple. The Lalji Temple was built in 1658 by Bir Singha II. The presiding deity being worshipped here is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radhika,
