Historically known as Keralam, the state of Kerala is a popular Indian state in South India on the Malabar coast. Bordered by states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and Lakshwadeep sea, Kerala is the thirteen largest state of India, by population. Primarily ruled by the Chera dynasty it attracted the Portuguese traders in the 15th century which further led to European colonisation. With the highest literacy rate, the state has the highest media exposure in the country with newspapers publishing in 9 languages. A key spice exporter along with production of coconut, tea, cashew, coffee and natural rubber contributing significantly to the national economy. It is also one of the prominent tourism destinations in the country with backwaters, lush green forests and Ayurveda tourism being the key attractions.
