One of the well-planned cities of India, Chandigarh is the common capital of Punjab and Haryana. Also known as “The City Beautiful”, Chandigarh features beautiful lakes, well-maintained gardens and dense greenery. Chandigarh is the finest example of a well-planned city with good quality modern architecture. Situated at the foothills of Shivalik, the city derives its name from the famous Chandi’ mandir located in the nearby area chosen for developing the site for the city. The city is known for its picturesque location, beautiful surroundings and gardens. It is also referred to as ‘The City Beautiful’ due to the central grid of gardens. It is the first planned city of India after independence and is known for its urban design and architecture.


The summer season experiences a hot and dry weather which extends from mid of March to mid of June. The months of May and June are the hottest months. Summers are long and experience occasional mild showers and thunderstorm. The temperature during summers varies from 25°C to 40 °C.

The monsoon brings heavy showers and remains till mid-September. Chandigarh experiences hot and humid weather during monsoon season.

The winter season in the city begins in the mid of November and extends till the mid of March with January being the coldest month of the year. The mean temperature during this period drops to 2°C.

The best time to visit Chandigarh is post monsoon from October to February.

How to Reach

Being an important holiday destination of India, it is well-connected to other major Indian cities by air, road and rail. Located around 12 km away from the city Centre, Chandigarh International Airport links the city with rest of the country by an extensive network of domestic flights.

Chandigarh has excellent road connectivity with other neighboring cities. Many direct buses are available from cities like Mussoorie, Shimla, McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, Delhi, Kullu etc. The National Highway 1 connects Chandigarh with Delhi, which takes around 4 to 5 hours.

Chandigarh Railway Station has several frequent trains plying from New Delhi and other major cities of India.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

Sector-17 Plaza: Sector-17 in Chandigarh is an important place of tourist interest. The sector has a shopping area and city center. It is considered to be pedestrians’ paradise adorned with beautiful fountains, tree groves and sculptures. It becomes the biggest outdoor club of the city in the evening when it is illuminated by fountains and beautiful neon signs.

Government Museum and Art Gallery: The Government Museum and Art Gallery in Chandigarh has its initiation dating back to the year 1947, when India got independence. The museum has a great collection of Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings along with Gandharan Sculptures made of stone. The museum also contains prehistoric fossils. It is situated in sector-10 in Chandigarh city, which can be visited on all working days between 10 am to 4:30 pm.

Rock Garden: Rock Garden is located in sector-1 in Chandigarh, near Sukhna Lake. The Rock garden has a collection of artworks made from urban and industrial waste. It is a beautiful garden which has been beautified with creativity. The garden is maintained in the form of a huge open-air hall that exhibits sculptures and artwork made from waste products such as forks, frames, handles, metal wires, porcelain, and broken bangles, etc.

Shankar’s International Dolls Museum: The International Dolls museum in Chandigarh displays beautiful collection of a variety of dolls. The museum started in the year 1985, and comes under the ambit of Indian Council of Child Welfare. The collection includes a fascinating variety of beautiful dolls from various parts of the world, such as Germany, Denmark, Spain, Korea, Russia, and Netherlands. The toy train and the Indian section of dolls are the main attractions of the museum. Indian section has beautiful display of dolls dressed up in the attires of various states. A huge replica of a railway station in Germany is a remarkable sight of the museum.

Sukhna Lake: Sukhna Lake is a beautiful lake situated at the foothills of Shivalik ranges. This 3 km long man-made lake was made in 1958. It serves as a great picnic spot and enables the tourists to enjoy water sports such as boating, water skiing and yachting, etc. It is a great place to relax and enjoy natural beauty.
