Honnemaradu is a nature and adventure lover’s delight. The list of things to do in this region includes water sports and camping. This place is situated on the back waters of the River Sharavathi and is totally away from the maddening city life. You can take a ride on a coracle and explore the beauty of the island across the lake or go for kayaking and boating. Stay in camps in Honnemaradu and enjoy campfire, self-cooked dinner and star-studded sky at night. Nature enthusiast can take long walks in the surrounding forests and take pleasure in watching various birds and butterflies fluttering around. Dive deep into the beautiful blue lake or plan a small picnic beside. You can also visit Jog Falls, which are just 26 km away from Honnemaradu.

The various adventure activities in Honnemaradu that you can enjoy are coracle ride, trekking, kayaking, and swimming among other activities. Apart from a destination for adventure buffs it is also a bird watcher’s paradise with a large variety of different species of birds and butterflies.


The best time to visit Honnemaradu is post monsoon season from late August to December. This is also the time when the surrounding waterfalls like the Jog Fall are in full force and the area is lush green and beautiful.

The summer months are from late February to May and the average temperatures are a comfortable 25 degrees Centigrade touching a high of 32 degrees Centigrade.

The winter season sets in during November to January with the temperatures dropping into the single digits at night. The days are cool and most pleasant. Safe to say then, that Honnemaradu is good anytime of the year except maybe the monsoon time.

How to Reach

Bangalore International airport is at a distance of 379 km from Honnemaradu and is the closest airport.

The closest railhead is Shimoga Town which approximately 80 km and a 2 hour drive away from Honnemaradu. From here you would have to take a jeep to cover the rest of your journey.

The place is connected to Shimoga and Bangalore by deluxe private bus services.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

Honnemaradu itself does not offer too much as far as sightseeing is concerned, but step a little away from the town and you will find a few interesting sights to see.
Gademane – is located 10 km from Honnemaradu. The village is inhabited by the Deeva community, who are renowned for their Chitara art and other ethnic art forms.

Sagara City: Close to Honnemaradu, about 15 km away is the Sagara City. The city is for the religious minded people and there are two temples one can visit here, the Mahaganapati temple and the Marikamba temple.

Honnemaradu is well-known for the Jog Falls, located 18 km from the heart of the city. The waterfalls are located on the Sharavathi River and the water gushes down a height of 252 meters, presenting a spectacular view. There are many sightseeing places around Honnemaradu, with the Jog Falls and Dabbe Falls being some worth visiting.

The Jog Falls: 18 km away from Honnemaradu is one of the most beautiful gifts of nature. Originating from the Sharavathi River, the waterfall comprises of four segments including Raja, Rani, Rover and Rocket. The water gushes down a height of 830 feet and offers a mesmerizing view amidst lush green surroundings. The Falls have several vantage sites from where you can enjoy the majestic view of the crashing waters. Visit the fall during the monsoon season, when the volume of water is at its peak. Interestingly, this is the first untired waterfall in India. This fall is also called as Gersoppa Falls and Joganda Gundi.
Other places to see near the Jog Falls are the Swarna Nadi River, the Sharavathi valley and the dense forest around the waterfall. The Dabbe Falls is another waterfall located around 30 km from Jog Falls. This waterfall is located in the Bheemeshwari Valley and quite beautiful.

There are some nearby towns that are popular because of museums and temples.

The small town of Ikkeri is around 20 km away from Honnemaradu. It was the capital of Keladi Nayakas. In the past, there was a palace made of mud and timber and adorned with carvings. Now there is a temple of Lord Shiva. On the stone walls of the temple are intricate carvings and sculptures.

Keladi: is a small town located 30 km away from Honnemaradu. This place is well-known for a museum and an old temple of Lord Shiva. If history interests you, explore the old manuscripts in the museum that were written during the era of the Keladi dynasty. You will get to see a collection of coins, cooper and palm leaves belonging to the Nayaka period. Veerbhadra, Parvathi and Rameshwara are the three Keladi temples located here; these temples reflect Dravidian and Hoysala styles of architecture.

Banavasi: is yet another ancient temple town located 60 km away from Banavasi. This town is located in the forests of the Western Ghats, on the banks of the Varda River. Banavasi is well known for the Madhukeshwara Temple, which was built way back in the ninth century.
