Junagadh is one of the most adorable places of Gujarat. This ancient city is a land of rich history dotted with several eye-catching forts and monuments. Along with being a historical city, Junagadh is also an important pilgrimage site. There are numerous temples in this region. The famous shrine of Lord Shiva, Somnath Temple, is only 79 km away from the city. The temple is one of the twelve holy Jyothirlingas.


The temperature remains around 35°C during summers in the city. The dry weather is not comfy enough to deal with. March, April, May and June usher the scorching heat of the sun. The lowest temperature is 28°C during these months.

June to September is the duration of the monsoon season. There are frequent rainfalls accompanied with thunderstorms.

October, November, December and January are the months of winter. The average temperature hovers around 25°C during this period. The best season to visit Junagadh is therefore winter.

How to Reach

Junagadh can be reached from any part of the country via road, rail and air. Junagadh does not have an airport of its own; the nearest airport is Keshod Airport at a distance of 40 km. Other nearby airports is at Porbandar and Rajkot, standing at a distance of 113 and 99 km respectively.

Junagadh has a prominent railway station which has connectivity to the major Indian cities like Ahmedabad, Veraval and Rajkot. Trains also run between the nearby locations close to Junagadh.

Junagadh is connected to other places of Gujarat like Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Bhavanagar, Dwarka, Somnath and Rajkot regular by bus service. Both private and state owned buses can be availed to travel to Junagadh from these cities.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

Sasan Gir Wildlife National Park: It is located exactly in the south-east direction of the city, 64 km away from it. The area of the park possesses 1412 sq. km space. The Asiatic Lions, which are now the endangered species, can be found in this place. It was built in 1965 and is counted among the top attractions in Junagadh. One can also find quality flora and fauna here.

Somnath Temple: Somnath Temple is definitely the most popular of Junagadh attractions, which is just 79 km away from Junagadh facing the Arabian Sea. According to the Hindu mythology, this sacred shrine is one of the Lord Shiva’s 12 Jyotirlingas, this is why religious people love to come and visit the temple.

Junagadh Gate: Junagadh Gate, one of the major Veraval attractions located in Somanth, is the major gateway to the town of Veraval as well as Somnath. This gate is the way to enter the city of Veraval. This is a triple entrance way with historical importance and is an ancient composition which was constructed a few centuries back. This is an outstanding gate with a lot of intricate carvings on the gate walls. The foreign invader, Mahmud Ghazni once broke this gate to enter into this sacred city to ruin the temples located in different parts of the town.

Veraval and Chorwad Beach: Both these beaches are established at the distance of around 6 km and 66 km from the core of Junagadh city respectively. Both of them are equally beautiful and have the serene environment.
