Khonsa

At an average elevation of about 1,215 m from sea level, Khonsa is a beautiful little hill-station with natural beauty all around it. Bordering Myanmar in the east and Assam in the south, Khonsa is the headquarters of Tirap district in Arunachal Pradesh and is located in the Tirap Valley surrounded by Himalayan ranges. Streams, deep gorges, dense forests and snow-clad hills are some of the features which describe the terrain in Khonsa. The beauty of this place lies in most of the natural surroundings. Kheti and Lajo Village, located nearby are some of the tribal villages which provide a glimpse of the lives and cultures of tribal people. To experience the Tibetan culture visit Miao, which is located around 154 km from this town in the Changlang district as it was a Tibetan Refugee settlement area.

September to April is the best period to visit Khonsa. Winters are chilly with temperatures dropping up to 0° Celsius.

How to Reach

No airport is available in Khonsa. The nearest airport is Chabua at a distance of 77 km located at Dibrugarh, Assam. The next available airport is Rowriah at Jorhat, Assam and it is 132 km away from this place. Both are domestic airports and are connected with some major cities such as Delhi, Chennai, etc.

Closest railway station for Khonsa is Namrup located at 29 km distance. Train is best mode to reach this place. Another station closer to this place is Borhat of Assam. State transport is also available for Khonsa.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

Khonsa is the wonderful hill station famous for receiving the first sun rays of morning in the world. Tirap Valley is key attraction here surrounded by the Himalayan peaks. Natural streams and dense forests with snowy hills are few more attractions of Khonsa. Trekkers are getting chance here as the peaks are rough steady.

Khonsa Museum: Museum provide ample of information related to historical background of this place. The different culture, ancient swords and weapons are displayed in this museum. Also get a chance to watch handlooms and art related collections here.

District Museum: District Museum was established in the year 1956. Artifacts representing the tribes of the land are on display here. The museum remains open from Monday to Friday excluding public holidays.

Kheti And Lajo Village: Kheti and Lajo are two villages in Khonsa that symbolize the culture and traditions of the bygone era. The dormitories of these villages present for view human skulls that were collected from headhunting days. It reflects the past and leads simple life content with having the basic needs fulfilled.

Namdapha National Park: Khonsa is surrounded with deep valleys and dense forest which means a chance to enjoy the wildlife at this place. Namdapha National Park is located at a distance of 166 km from Khonsa. Big cats, tiger; snow leopard, leopard and clouded leopards are majorly seen in this park. It was declared as wildlife sanctuary and tiger reserve in 1983.

Miao: Last destination for tourism in Khonsa is Miao that is another attractive place. Miao is only 154 km far from this tourist town and it is the gateway to Namdapha National Park as well. Here you can enjoy scenic museum and a small zoo. When at Miao then do visit the Tibetan refugee’s camp.
