Lakshadweep means ‘a hundred thousand islands’ in Malayalam, the local language. However there are only 36 islands having a total area of 32 sq kilometers. It is the tiniest Union Territory of India with 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. Ten Islands are inhabited. They are Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy. Lakshadweep is one of the most beautiful destinations that one could visit during the holidays.

The beautiful marine life, the villages, the tourist resorts and the mosques are great attractions for the tourists. The biggest of tourist attractions in Lakshadweep lies in its pristine charm and its laid back life. Far away from the urban clamor and clutter, the only sound one can hear is that of waves crashing against the beaches and the cry of seagulls. Far from the madding crowds one can have a tranquil experience on the islands.


The best time to visit Lakshadweep is between December to May when the weather is cooler and drier. The period between May to September is generally rainy owing to the monsoon season.

How to Reach

Whether Indian or foreigner, everyone requires a special permit to visit Lakshadweep; While foreigners are restricted to visit the islands of Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat and on transit basis to Kavaratti. Indians can visit the other Islands as well but accommodation is very limited. One needs to pass through Kochi to reach Lakshadweep and from there one can take a plane or ship to reach destination.

Kadmat is an island about 407 km from Cochin. The sandy beaches and extensive stretch of palm trees add to the beauty of the island.
