Matheran is a land of misty mountains, floating clouds, sparkling greenery and hidden trekking routes. Matheran is located in the state of Maharashtra. The name Matheran comprises two words “Mathe” and “ran” and means the jungle that is located on the top of a hill. The loveliness at the hill top is quite different from other attractions of the place. Here the cliff of the mountains offers a chance to explore the various panoramic views of the Deccan plains on one side and the Western Ghats on another. This is a perfect place to get a break from the bustling life of the cities.

Matheran has a number of unique distinctions; it is the smallest hill station in India. Secondly it is one of the few places in the world where vehicles are only allowed till a specific point and no vehicles are allowed into the main part of the hill station. Thus Matheran is a throwback to the past and takes you back in time when there were no vehicles and horsepower was the best mode of transport. There are many look-out points which are the major attractions of Matheran. The Panorama Point gives a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. The Louisa Point offers a great view of the Prabal Fort. The other points are One Tree Hill, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point and more.


The summer season starts from the month of March and stays till the month of May. The mercury level during the season gets stable that makes for the best time to visit Matheran.

Monsoon season brings with it a pleasant weather to stroll around. The heavy rainfall makes travelers happy as the cool atmosphere gives perfect chance to explore the blessed beauty. The monsoon season remains from the month of June till September.

The winter season comes from the month of December and lasts till February. The average temperature at the place during winter season is around 15°C.

How to Reach

Mumbai airport is the nearest airport to Matheran. Located at a distance of 100 km, Mumbai airport is well connected to all major cities and towns.

Neral is the nearest broad gauge railway station near Matheran is located at a distance of 20 km. The railway station is well connected from all major cities and towns. A 2 feet narrow gauge railway line links Neral to Matheran. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km over some beautiful forest territory.

Matheran can also be reached via Mumbai-Pune Highway and Karjat. State transport buses from Mumbai, Pune and Panvel run regularly to Matheran. Remember that no vehicles are allowed inside the town. So, Matheran has to be explored on foot or on horses.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

Alexander Point: Alexander point is one such scenic landmark in Matheran that opens up to gorgeous views of Palasdari Lake, Rambaug Point, Garbut Point and Chowk Point. Be there at sunrise or sunset to immerse in the golden green forests that dazzles under orange hue. The brown color roads bordered by dense tall trees and thick short bushes are a respite for trekkers who come from far of lands to explore Matheran’s hidden trekking alleys. Walk on these preserved roads till the peak of Alexander Point and catch a glimpse of towers of Bhivpuri Power house. It is ideal for peace- seekers, honeymooners, family vacationers and mere leisure lovers. Against the backdrop of lush green forest and the Ulhas river flowing below, Matheran is one of those scenic destinations in Maharashtra whose soothing air, dazzling greenery and peaceful ambience create the most vibrant amalgamation of natural wonders.

Prabal Fort: Prabal Fort is one of the major attractions of Matheran and catches the attention of travelers. The fort was captured by Chathrapathi Shivaji from the Mughals. The Fort is presently in ruins and is located at the flat top of the hill named Prabhal. There were two gateways and eleven towers in the fortifications and in 1818 the gateways were destroyed. The rich past of India and the Marathas is depicted here.

Charlotte Lake: Charlotte Lake is also called the Sharlott Lake because of the local pronunciation; Charlotte Lake is one of the most beautiful spots in Matheran. On the right side of the lake, there is the ancient Pisarnath Temple. The two famous picnic spots of Matheran, Louisa point and Echo point are located on the left side of the lake.
