Pushkar

Pushkar is a town in the State of Rajasthan in India. It is situated at 14 km North West from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus). Pushkar is famous for its scenic beauty and more than 400 temples. The place has a number of exciting tourist attractions including the famous Pushkar Lake and Brahma Temple. The annual Pushkar Fair held every year in October-November is another major attraction for tourists. Pushkar Lake is a beautiful semi-circular lake with 52 lovely ghats surrounding it. According to beliefs, a dip in the Pushkar Lake on the auspicious occasion of Karthik Poornima brings salvation to devotees. Brahma Temple is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. The beautiful marble temple is famous for its four-headed idol of Lord Brahma. It is decorated with silver coins and a silver turtle on its black and white chequered floor. Savitri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Savitri, the first wife of Lord Brahma, is the second most important temple in Pushkar. Located just behind the Brahma Temple on a hilltop, it provides a panoramic view of the scenic Pushkar Lake and exotic sand dunes.

Weather

Pushkar’s weather is primarily dominated by the hot summers, as is the case in the entire state of Rajasthan. However, the city is not as dry the rest of the state. The city experiences abundant rainfall during the monsoons starting from July till September.  Winters are the best time to visit the city as the climate is favorable.

How to Reach

Pushkar does not have an airport or direct rail connectivity. The nearest airport is the Sangamner airport in Jaipur which is about 127 kms away. Ajmer is the nearest rail head with connectivity from across the country as Ajmer itself is a popular tourist destination. It is about 11 kms away from Pushkar. However, there is good road connectivity with bus service available from almost all major cities.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

Apart from the Pushkar Lake and the Brahma Temple there are many other attractions and activities to Pushkar. Rangji or Rangnath Temple is known for its gracious South Indian style of architecture. The temple houses a huge image of Lord Vishnu. It has a high rising ‘Gopuram’ (large gate) and Garuda pillars studded with a mythical bird styled in gold. Varah Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It has an image of Vishnu in the incarnation of wild boar. Apteshwar Temple, a 12th century temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pushkar offers an exciting range of activities to its visitors. One can enjoy excursions to Kuchaman famous for its fort and palaces, Kisangarh famous for Kisangarh Art, Ajmer famous for Dargah of Sufi Saint Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya, and Sambhar Lake. One can simply sit on the bank of the Pushkar Lake and enjoy the beautiful vistas. Don’t forget to take stroll down the Pushkar Lake in the evening. As the sun sets, the lake changes color and offer a wonderful sight.
