Ranikhet

Situated at an altitude of 1869 meters above sea level in the Almora district of Uttarakhand is the picturesque town of Ranikhet. The beautiful hill town means ‘Queen Meadows’ and is just about 59 km from Nainital and 50 km from Almora. It is surrounded by the mesmerizing snowcapped Himalayas in the Kumaon region and is also a popular Army cantonment destination. Surrounded by lush green forests and having a serene environment the place is divided into two beautiful ridges offering some magnificent view of the Himalayas. The Ranikhet ridge is at an altitude of 5983 ft above sea level and the other ridge is Chaubattia ridge is at a height of 6942 ft above sea level. It is believed that the Queen of Kumaon was so mesmerized by the beauty of this place that the King of Kumaon built a place for her here and named it Ranikhet. It was rediscovered by the Britishers in 1869 and got established as their summer retreat. It is today the head quarter of Indian Army’s Kumaon Regiment and is also home to the Naga Regiment and a Military hospital.

Weather

Being a hill resort Ranikhet is best to visit during the summer season. So, the apt time to take a trip is between March and October. Winters in Ranikhet are extremely cold so people who love snow can surely take a trip at that time.

How to Reach

Ranikhet is about 279 km from Delhi and is well connected by all the major towns of Uttarakhand. There is no railhead in this destination. The nearest rail head is in Kathgodam and one needs to take a bus or a cab to reach this destination.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

The tranquil town of Ranikhet has much to offer for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure lovers. The forests offer a varied variety of flora and fauna. The mix of wildlife includes leopards, mountain cats and goats, barking deer, sambar, red fox, porcupine, red faced monkey, etc. The terrain is uneven and has many streams, valleys, meadows, climbs and chasms offering ample options to explore the nature.

The trees of Oak, Pine and Deodar along with fruit orchards along the mountains offer some breath-taking viewpoints. One can trek to the nearby places like Tarikhet which is about 8 km away or Sitlakhet which is about 18 km away discovering the natural beauty of the place.

There are many temples that one can visit in Ranikhet like Jhula Devi temple, Binsar Mahadev temple, Hairakhan temple, Rama Temple. Other attractions include the famous Army Museum, Chaubatia Orchards, Bhalu Dam and the Army Golf Course.
