For the nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts, Shivgiri is an ideal destination. Situated in the Chikamaglur district of Karnataka the place is near the Yemmedoddi village. This wonderous nature’s delight is a great escape from the bustling city life and is completely isolated from the outside world. The thick, dark forests of Shivgiri cover the slopes of Hoggarekangri hills and has extensive coffee plantations around.

The coffee estate is located in the middle of a tiger reserve at the hill top and one can often spot the tiger taking a stroll in the middle of the plantations. The forests of Shivgiri are home to variety of wildlife species and birds and offer ample adventure opportunities like trekking, rock climbing and wildlife viewing.


Shivgiri is a year-round destination except for monsoons in July and August as the place experiences heavy rainfall. The best time to visit is October to March as the weather is quite pleasant.

How to Reach

Shivgiri is well connected to Bengaluru and Hubli n Karnataka. The town has a good road and rail connectivity. There is a railway station in Shivgiri that is well connected to Hubli, which in turn is well connected to other parts of the country. Cabs are available on hire to reach Shivgiri from the station.

Private and State run buses are available from Bengaluru, Hubli, Mangalore, Kollegala and other cities of Karnataka to reach Shivgiri. These buses ply on a regular basis making it easier for guests to reach this beautiful destination

The nearest airport is Bengaluru airport that is about 235 km away from Shivgiri. The airport is well connected to all the major cities in India and also internationally.

Key attractions/Sightseeing

There is a lot to explore in and around Shivgiri. Doddabale Siddaragudda Peak is located at an elevation of 5500 feet. The peak offers fascinating views of the river and the villages around. The trek to this peak is amidst the coffee plantations where one can find pugmarks of animals. It is best to take an experienced guide along en-route this trail.

There is a 400-year-old Shiva temple that is a must visit during the trip to Shivgiri. The temple can be seen from the top of the Doddabale Siddharagudda Peak.

The other place of interest is Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary where one can spot a large number of rare species of animals and birds. This is the 25th Tiger Reserve of India and apart from the Tiger, one can also spot king vulture, jackals, elephants, and many other species.

Madagadakere Lake is another key attraction of Shivgiri and is well known for boating. It is one of the largest lakes in India and as per the local folklore the lake was created by magical rain wherein the small water drops carried by the wind filled the lake. The lake offers splendid views of the surroundings and an extremely soothing environment to relax.
