Nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Ghats, Yelagiri is a famous hill station in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. At an altitude of 1,410 meters above the sea level and spread across 30 square km, Yelagiri village (also spelled Elagiri) is surrounded by orchards and green valleys. Yelagiri is also a perfect place for those who love traveling and exploring nature.

The history of Yelagiri dates back to the British colonial time and it was once the personal possession of the Elagiri Zamindar Family. Besides the sightseeing, one can even buy some of the local things as well. Administration of Tamil Nadu is developing Yelagiri hill station as a tourist destination by promoting adventure sports such as paragliding and rock climbing.


The summer season starts from March and lasts till June. The temperature ranges between 18°C and 34°C. Though, the days might be on the little hotter side but the cool winds make the hill station quite pleasant and cool in the evening.

Monsoons commence from the month of July and remains till the month of September. This magnificent hill station experiences an average rainfall of 900 mm yearly. The cool breeze during the evening time makes the weather a bit chilly. The hill station offers a cool winter from November to February. During this period, the minimum and maximum temperature ranges between 12°C and 24°C respectively.

Yelagiri has a moderate climate therefore travelers love to visit the city all through the year. But still, the best season to visit Yelagiri is the months from November to February. During this period, tourist can enjoy the real beauty of this place. The whole place looks fabulous and one can even enjoy the adventures activities such as trekking, paragliding and rock climbing.

The nearest airport to Yelagiri is Bangalore International Airport which is approximately 145 km away from this magnificent hill station. Located at a distance of 21 km, Jolarpettai railway station is the nearest railway station to Yelagiri and it is commonly used by the travelers. The station is well connected with all the main cities of the country.

With just 14 hamlets situated over four hills, the small town of Yelagiri has turned to be a favorite weekend getaway for those living in Chennai and Bangalore. Nothing apart from its quaint charm, few historic remains and artificial and natural splendors are the main reasons for its popularity. It is also a favorite hotspot amongst trekkers. This not- so- known hill station has some gorgeous valleys, trekking trails and breath taking peaks that open up to amazing trekking routes.
